Garden Party Hat with
Ribbonwork Flowers
Suz Simanaitis
Spend a day learning elegant and gentle millinery traditions that have been lost
in our hustle-and-bustle modern world. In this workshop you'll shape a
jaunty
straw hat that packs flat for traveling and goes together in a jiffy -
and will fit any size head! Then
you'll adorn your new hat with a cascade of luscious ribbonwork
flowers-- free-standing, three-dimensional blossoms made using traditional
millinery techniques. Create a spray of roses, dahlias, fuchsias, berries,
buds
and leaves using wired and unwired ribbons, vintage stamens and bits of yummy
trim. The flowers have realistic shapes--it's your unique selection of
ribbon
colors that will determine whether your petit chapeau turns out demurely-vintage
or far-out-fantastical. Either way it'll be gorgeous!
A materials fee of $20 will be collected in class in exchange for a special kit
of hard-to-find millinery supplies including vintage flower stamens and one
unblocked woven straw "hood" for you to shape into a hat.
Suz used to
wear a lot of hats, literally, but now she mostly wears them figuratively. She
is co-founder and creative director of ARTitude Zine.
