POCKET METAL JOURNAL

By Tracy Vaughn Moore

During this workshop, we will construct a metal covered, leather bound journal.  This class will focus on numerous techniques including; metal finishes, metal manipulation, stamping metal words, making the Dremel tool or cordless drill your best friend, creative closures, pin riveting, clear embedding products, and using the long stitch to bind it all together.  The techniques we will cover in this class are very versatile and can easily be applied to jewelry construction and a myriad of other art forms.

Supply list:

Various found objects; preferably small ones as we are working on a small (3” X 4”) journal.  (These objects will be used for incorporation into both the cover and the closure.)

A couple of beads and charms.

Paper:  any paper you wish to bind into your small journals.  Pages should be cut or torn to 4” x 6”.  (For my journals, I use 140# hot press watercolor paper, but feel free to bring any kind of paper.)  Depending on the thickness of your paper, the number of pages required, varies.  You should aim to bring enough pages, so that when they are folded in half and stacked on each other, they are about an inch high.

One tube of Black Rub & Buff.

Optional supplies:  (I will have these available to use…however, should you wish to bring your own, please feel free to do so.)

Dremel tool with various bits

Small ball peen hammer

Metal Alphabet punches.

Metal stamping block

Smooth file

Sandpaper (around 400 grit)

Various jewelry pliers, wire cutters, and tin snips.

Small thin awl

1/8” and ¼” wide  .032 gauge flat brass. (These brass sticks can be found at most hardware stores, and or at specialty wood working supply stores.  Most of the time they are found under “Hobby Metals”)

1/16” , 5/64”, and ¼” drill bits.

Remember, I will have plenty of the “optional supplies” for use in class, and I don’t want anyone to rush out and buy these items.  If you have them already, bring them.  If not….don’t worry about it.
